The third in the series of Helen Macpherson Smith Commissions was created by sound and installation duo Leber and Chesworth in ACCA’s major exhibition hall. Leber and Chesworth combined the ecclesiastical and the secular in this massive sound and structure project. Almost Always Everywhere Apparent collided the concepts of the ‘all seeing’ enlightenment with the prescient and primordial unseen. The audience entered a heavenly chamber, or an earthly confinement, depending upon their own reactions to the space. AAEA was a chamber of corridors and a central tomb/womb space in which the acoustimatic play was unleashed. The 54 minute sound opera in 1,000 voices explored the hidden dramas of life, death and the afterlife, while video images offered conundrums to consider.
