Now we’re talking…
NEW14
Presented by The Balnaves Foundation

March 14 – 18 May 2014

For twelve years now, ACCA has selected seven rising Australian artists and invited them to make a new work for the annual commissions exhibition, NEW.

Artists are offered the financial, curatorial and promotional support of the ACCA team and the chance to step up and make something big, bold and brave for a new audience.

The long-running NEW series is now considered to be one of the most important commissions exhibitions in Australia, and is known not only as a predictor of the art and art stars of the future, but as an indicator of the latest materials, methods and ideas emanating from current contemporary artistic practice.

Previous NEW artists include Daniel von Sturmer, Anatasia Klose, David Rosetzky, Angelica Mesiti, Rebecca Bauman and Matt Hinkley.

The NEW14 guest-curator is Kyla McFarlane, independent writer/curator and associate curator for the Centre for Contemporary Photography.

And the NEW14 artists are:

Kenny Pittock (25, VIC)
Kenny Pittock is an eclectic artist, working across drawing, sculpture, video, performance and text. For NEW14, Kenny will present a large selection of drawings and videos he is making of passengers on his train rides in and out of the city.

Danae Valenza (27, VIC)
Danae is a multi-disciplinary artist working in Melbourne. She has a particular interest in music, and how it is created, often working collaboratively with composers, musicians and performers to explore a ‘visual musicality’. For NEW14, Danae is developing a colour organ from a grand piano and coloured lights, from which she will make photographic ‘portraits’ of the performances played on it.

Taree Mackenzie (33, VIC)
Through video and installation, Taree explores the perceptual effects of colour, light and space.  For NEW14, Taree is developing a large-scale, multi-screened projection work, activated with a live feed.

Charles Dennington (31, NSW)
Charles is a Sydney-based artist working with sculpture, photography, video and installation. For NEW14, Charles will produce a playful and intriguing installation using the height of ACCA’s gallery space, combining found objects, intimate sculptures and video with larger, bamboo sculptures.

Daniel McKewen (30, QLD)
Daniel’s art focuses on cinema, the entertainment industry and the creative, critical, and emotional behaviours of fans. For NEW14, Daniel is making a large-scale video and sound installation based on a familiar sitcom set.

Andrew Hazewinkel (48, VIC)
Andrew is a multi disciplinary artist working with photography, sculpture, video and installation. For NEW14, Andrew is working on a materially rich sculptural and video installation, featuring the Riace Bronzes, ancient bronze warriors raised from the bottom of the sea, his father’s wooden writing desk and a fake female Hercules sculpture.

Jelena Telecki (36, NSW)
Jelena Telecki is a painter, originally from Yugoslavia, now based in Sydney. Her figurative paintings are mysterious and cinematic, alluding to histories both cultural and personal. Jelena is working on a significant new series of paintings for NEW14, drawing on eclectic subject matter such as Tito, dead stars and television astrologers.
