ACCA is thrilled to announce a special presentation of German artist Torsten Lauschmann’s mesmerizing At the heart of everything a row of holes on 3 August 2012.

Audiences are invited to enter Lauschmann’s immersive,  spellbinding world in two very special performances at the National Theatre in St Kilda.

Winner of the inaugural UK Margaret Tait Award for artists working with the moving image, Lauschmann creates a surround-theatre event where carpets fly through the air, pianos play themselves, and mechanical monkeys and mice make great music.  The work was first commissioned by Creative Scotland, and comes to Melbourne as a special event to coincide with the Melbourne Art Fair 2012.

At the heart of everything a row of holes simply stunned audiences when first performed at the Glasgow Film Festival last year.  The performance involves Lauschmann positioned alongside the audience in the theatre, armed with a hand held projector and series of special visual and sound effects that bounce around the walls, floor and screen.

“The audience was rapt, following the spotlight as it swung, dimmed, to the spot wherever the next projection would begin.  Craning to the far left, we saw footage of mechanical toys, monkeys clapping cymbals, apes swinging on the spot, strolling wooden mice on sticks with trundling legs.  Switching onto the main screen, painting of cherubs playing instruments were overlaid with a clanging industrial soundtrack…..when it was over, the audience didn’t want to leave.”  Sean Welsh, Glasgow Film Festival.
