What body, or whose body, is this object designed for?
– By presenting a readymade object as art, you can challenge the viewer’s understanding of what an artwork can be.
– Have a rectangular shape with rounded edges.
– Contain text pressed into its surface.
– Have a small oval or logo.
– Smell fresh and clean.
– Leave a filmy residue on your hands.

Ask questions about the object that could lead to new and interesting ways of viewing or interpreting it.

Consider how your sensory experience of the object might contribute to its meaning.

Step 3: Decide what you want to say about your object

Decide what idea, message, feeling or story you want your artwork to communicate.

Think about how you can recontextualise the found object or change its meaning.

Changing the meaning can be as simple as adding something, removing something, carving into the object, adding text/symbols or attaching another object.

Consider what your chosen object could communicate and how an alteration could communicate your personal experiences, ideas or perspective.

For example, a bar of soap could explore:
– It engages with some of today’s biggest questions: the growing influence of technology and AI, identity and subjectivity, the lasting legacies of colonialism, the ongoing power of traditional art mediums, and the role and critique of cultural institutions.

Artists: Amanda Bell, Amanda Bennetts, Nicholas Currie, Naveed Farro, Caesar Florence-Howard, Diego Ramírez and EJ Son

Curated by: Dr Shelley McSpedden & Sophie Prince

Download Exhibition Wall Labels

Introduction

About the Artist

Key artworks

Amanda Bennetts, Axis Mundi, 2026

Nicholas Currie, I wonder if its all gammin, witchway, (P)oxymoron, big X, self again, 2026

Naveed Farro, The Palace series, 2025-2026

Support Material

For Teachers

How to use this kit

This exhibition kit has been developed by ACCA Education to support learning in conjunction with the ACCA exhibition, NEW26. Three key artworks from the exhibition have been highlighted, with discussion questions included to prompt students’ thinking. His artworks emerge from direct, physical encounters with elemental forces. With trans rights increasingly under threat internationally, this is a timely exhibition that addresses themes of memory, representation, intersectionality, and positionality.

r e a’s work has illuminated the ongoing impacts of colonisation on queer and Indigenous bodies. Figures like Johnson have become powerful symbols of the need for queer solidarity with the trans community.
