This program is co-presented with The Guardian and will not be recorded. Zena Cumpston<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Zena Zada Cumpston is a Barkandji woman with Afghan, English, and Irish heritage. Zena is a storyteller, manifesting across her work as an artist, writer, consultant, educator and curator. Zena seeks out projects that empower community and Country, interrogating what we collectively risk through continued failures in empowering the custodial responsibilities of First Peoples communities. She is a widely published writer, a member of the Birrarung Council, and is a co-author of the 2021 Federal State of the Environment Report. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Zena is the proud recipient of the 2026 Bandalang Artist Residency at ANU and the Ian Potter Emerging Artist Fellowship. In 2026 her art will be featured across many projects, including the Rising Festival\u2019s First Peoples Art Trams, the ‘Watch These Hands’<\/em> Exhibition at Heide Museum of Modern Art and as an artist in residence at the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA) in Dublin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Shelley McSpedden<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Shelley McSpedden is Senior Curator and Head of Exhibitions at the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA) in Melbourne, where her recent projects have included Julius von Bismarck: This is not the storm<\/em> 2026, Tschabalala Self: Skin Tight <\/em>2025 (co-curated with Myles Russell-Cook); The Charge That Binds<\/em> 2024; Tennant Creek Brio: Juparnta Ngattu Minjinypa Iconocrisis <\/em>2024 (co-curated with Max Delany, Dr Jessica Clarke and Elyse Goldfinch); Future Remains: The 2024 Macfarlane Commissions <\/em>2024; and James Nguyen: Open Glossary<\/em> 2023. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Prior to joining ACCA, Shelley was Senior Curator and Acting Artistic Director at Shepparton Art Museum (SAM), where she oversaw the inaugural exhibition program for the new purpose-built, landmark museum in 2021. Shelley has also held curatorial roles at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI), Monash University Museum of Art (MUMA) and National Exhibitions Touring Support (NETS), as well as academic appointments at Monash University and RMIT. She has written extensively on contemporary art and edited several art publications. The group aims to enhance understanding, awareness, and support for contemporary art within these communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Founded by Xinyuan (Caesar) Li, Zhen Xiong, Evelyn Han and Yue Yang, the club currently comprises Caesar Li, Zhen Xiong, Shujing (Jenna) Ji, Pallaksch, Haocheng Zhang and Chenchen Wang. The name of the art club is derived from one of the most commonly used sounds in language, \u201cah\u201d, which is often used to express exclamations, surprises, questions, and other moods. Responding to the movement within the artworks, as well as the themes of humanity and nature explored in the exhibition, these exercises are designed to ignite creativity and encourage a fresh exploration of drawing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Lauren Simmonds\u2019 practice crosses drawing, sculpture, installation and performance. She often uses her body as a medium to traverse these artforms. Previous works have taken the form of immersive kinetic installations that are part performance and part sculpture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This workshop is open to the general public and teachers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n All material provided. Adopting von Bismarck\u2019s playful and scientific enquiry to artmaking the activities will draw upon humankinds\u2019 relationship with nature.

Through direct engagement with current gallery practice, participants will explore the ways exhibitions are conceptualised, planned, and realised within a non-collecting institution. The session will unpack the presentation and display of artworks, and the materials, methods, and processes involved in professional installation. Teachers will also learn about preventative conservation strategies, considering how the care and preservation of artworks informs display decisions and audience engagement.
Led by Samantha Vawdrey, Senior Exhibitions Manager & Registrar, ACCA, this session offers valuable insight into the relationships between artists, curators, and institutions, supporting the development of students\u2019 understanding of the art industry, professional practices, and the exhibition process. This professional learning opportunity provides practical and transferable knowledge to support classroom delivery.
This session is aimed at secondary teachers and art educators who would like to strengthen their knowledge of the installation process, particularly those delivering VCE Art Making and Exhibiting Units 3 & 4 (Area of Study 3) and Unit 2 (Area of Study 1). This informal session will take place during the exhibition Julius von Bismarck: This is not the storm<\/em><\/a>.
