10 Green Bottles represented a new stage in Burchill’s working methodology, referred to as ‘material conceptualism’. While the title of the exhibition made ironic reference to the well-known children’s song it also forged a range of more provocative associations, including issues of sameness and identity, the nature of relationships that exist between identical objects, and the function of art in the exhibition space, whether or not it is ‘hanging on the wall’.
