The Dwelling

9 Oct–29 Nov 2009

ACCA Main Exhibition Gallery

In partnership with the Melbourne International Arts Festival, ACCA presented The Dwelling, a major international exhibition that transformed the ordinary domestic space into a phantasmic encounter through imagistic, surrealistic twists. The exhibition included Cardiff/Miller’s extraordinary kunstkamma Opera for Small Room; Michaela Milian’s Forenwald animation installation; Joyce Hinterding and David Haine’s Pennsylvania House; Eljia Liisa Ahtila’s Talo (the house) and Callum Morton’s iconic International Style.

The Dwelling took visitors on a marvelous psychological and symbolic journey through various manifestations of the domestic and maverick dwelling. Along the way they encountered murder, suspense, floods, flying cars, unwelcome visitors, hermits, opera, German history, urban planning and Hansel and Gretel!

The Dwelling was awarded the Age Critics Award for the Melbourne International Festival, a first for Visual Arts.

Exhibiting Artists: Eija-Liisa Ahtila, Chantal Akerman, Janet Cardiff & George Bures Miller, David Haines & Joyce Hinterding, Michaela Melián, Callum Morton, David Noonan & Simon Trevaks, Sofia Hultén and Calum Stirling
