Hear insights about Dwelling Poetically: Mexico City, a case study from curator Chris Sharp and exhibiting artists ektor garcia, Isabel Nuño de Buen, and Martin Soto Climent on the first Saturday of the exhibition.
Following an introduction by Chris Sharp, participating artists will give insights into their new works created during Melbourne residencies at in the lead up to the exhibition. ektor garcia’s installation involving a complex assemblage of glazed ceramic, leather, steel, crochet and bronze further explores the artist interest in questions of temporality, desire, decay and marginality. Isabel Nuño de Buen has developed a site-specific sculptural installation inspired by memories of cityscape and architecture, objects and bodies, which the artist refers to as constellations or psychological landscapes; and Martin Soto Climent has created a site-specific architecturally-scaled installation which speaks to the relations between public and private space, desire and the city itself.

Chris Sharp
Chris Sharp is a curator and writer based in Mexico City. With artist Martin Soto Climent he runs the independent project space Lulu. He was recently appointed curator of the New Zealand Pavilion for the 58th Venice Biennale in 2019, with artist Dane Mitchell and co-curator Zara Stanhope.
ektor garcia
Born Red Bluff, California, lives and works in New York City. garcia’s work synthesises an interest in queer culture and arts and crafts traditions with strong roots in Mexico. Using leather making, ceramics, sewing, welding, embroidery and collecting, the artist creates environments evocative of altars or fetish objects which are both elegant and unsettling. Recent exhibitions include: Trigger: Gender as a Tool and a Weapon, New Museum, New York, 2017-18; kriziz, Kurimanzutto, Mexico City, 2016; and Matthew K Abonnenc and ektor Garcia, Sargents Daughters, New York, 2016.
Isabel Nuño de Buen
Born Mexico City, lives and works in Hannover and Mexico City and works in the fields of sculpture, installation and drawing. Recent solo exhibitions include: Nightwalks, The 500 Capp Street Foundation, San Francisco, 2017, and scala polis, taut, axis mundi (Constellation 1.2), Kurimanzutto, Mexico City, 2015. Nuño de Buen’s sculptural practice is inseparable from her experience growing up in Mexico City, which is continually morphing and expanding. Inspired by architectural forms and subjective experience, the artist deploys a variety of media and materials, including drawing, plaster, papier maché, steel, watercolor and paint, to create informal assemblage installations, urban plans and maquettes of a decidedly lyrical and sometimes maniacal nature.
Martin Soto Climent
Born Mexico City, lives and works in Mexico City. Soto Climent sources materials and images from the city streets and suburban neighbourhoods urban suburbs, to create photographs, sculptures and installations. However, his work is less about valorising the overlooked, neglected and everyday than it is about transforming it. Recent exhibitions include: Frenetic Gossamer, Palais de Tokyo, Paris, 2016); Fortezzuola, Museo Pietro Canonica, Rome, 2016; Caramel Huysmans, Proyectos Monclova, Mexico City, 2016; and the The Sleeping Beauty, Museo Universitario del Chopo, Mexico City, 2016; His work has been featured in group exhibitions at Kunsthalle Wien; ICA London; MCA Chicago; and the Sculpture Center, New York, among others.
