Head to the upcoming MADA Artforum at Monash University’s Caulfield Campus to hear artists in residence ektor garcia and Martin Soto Climent speak about their practice and development of new works to be exhibited in ACCA’s upcoming exhibition Dwelling Poetically: Mexico City, a case study.

ARTIST BIOS

ektor garcia
Born Red Bluff, California, 1968, lives and works in New York City. garcia’s work synthesises an interest in queer culture and arts and crafts traditions with strong roots in Mexico. Using leather making, ceramics, sewing, welding, embroidery and collecting, the artist creates environments evocative of altars or fetish objects which are both elegant and unsettling. Recent exhibitions include: Trigger: Gender as a Tool and a Weapon, New Museum, New York, 2017-18; kriziz, Kurimanzutto, Mexico City, 2016; and Matthew K Abonnenc and ektor Garcia, Sargents Daughters, New York, 2016.

Martín Soto Climent
Born Mexico City, 1977, lives and works in Mexico City. Soto Climent sources materials and images from the city streets and suburban neighbourhoods urban suburbs, to create photographs, sculptures and installations. However, his work is less about valorising the overlooked, neglected and everyday than it is about transforming it. Recent exhibitions include: Frenetic Gossamer, Palais de Tokyo, Paris, 2016); Fortezzuola, Museo Pietro Canonica, Rome, 2016; Caramel Huysmans, Proyectos Monclova, Mexico City, 2016; and the The Sleeping Beauty, Museo Universitario del Chopo, Mexico City, 2016; His work has been featured in group exhibitions at Kunsthalle Wien; ICA London; MCA Chicago; and the Sculpture Center, New York, among others.
