A three part series of separate installations by three young female artists based in Melbourne, Sydney and Perth that explored notions of sculpture and text.
1. Maureen Burns: Between Words and Things
Mother of pearl buttons were sewn onto wall-size, white plaster boards in a random, computer generated pattern that referenced minimalism while also denying minimalist purity due to the reflection of light on the buttons.
2. Gail Hastings: A Page Torn From a Secret
A text-based work that examined the definition of sculpture. As the viewer read the work he or she entered both the physical and fictional space, becoming an active participant in the narrated event.
3. Virginia Ward: His Our Hers
An installation of three lists under the headings ‘HIS’, ‘OURS’ and ‘HERS’ that challenged viewers to consider language and gender. Viewers could add their own words to the lists, forming a catalogue of gender specific and neutral language.
