Carolyn Eskdale: Untitled Rooms

20 Jul–26 Aug 2001

ACCA, Dallas Brooks Drive, The Domain

In the mixed media installation Untitled Rooms, Eskdale interrelated different kinds of space.  She created rooms within rooms, selecting and excising rooms from elsewhere and encasing these sections in transparent fabric partitions that divided the gallery space. Familiar architectural elements were divorced from their usual contexts and imaginatively recombined. Freestanding or nestled into corners, they embodied pure form rather than function and were obscured behind a veil of fabric that – like our own memories and associations of certain spaces – functioned as an intermediary, liminal zone in our recognition of prior times and places. Eskdale constructed these partitions using gauze cloth stretched tight over aluminium armatures so that we could at once apprehend the discrete volumetric form and see right through it to the rest of the gallery space.
