Monoliths was an installation of nine large, irregularly shaped, free-standing paintings based on the Ring of Brogar stones in the Orkney Islands. Arnaoutopoulos related these large monolithic standing stones to urban industrial shapes through their roughly hewn, painted surfaces. Working in response to the industrial environment, this series of works grew out of Arnaoutopoulos’s recent paintings made from the accumulation of detritus, dust, grit and other materials in his studio.
