Sue Ford was an influential Australian artist of photography, film and multimedia and one of the first women photographers to establish an independent art practice. Her works grew out of her experiences of the 'here' and 'now', drawing its energy from an engagement with life. In the spirit of do-it-yourself feminism, and practical rather than institutional action, Ford was committed to creating new structures for the production of art, its dissemination and display. Her strategies included working collectively (as a member of Reel Women) and skill sharing (with the Tiwi women on Bathurst Island).
