ACCA’s major survey by internationally acclaimed artist Tacita Dean presented recent and new projects including the major portrait film works Merce Cunningham performs ‘Stillness (in three movements)’ to John Cage’s composition 4’33” with Trevor Carlson, New York City, 28 April 2007 (six Performances; six films) and Michael Hamburger along with several of Dean’s Berlin projects. New projects included the monumental Burial Stones.
In her films, Dean offers the viewer the opportunity to luxuriate in slowness, stillness and observation. There is no commotion; time is there to ruminate. Running counter to the hectic pace of much contemporary visual communication, Dean’s film minutes seem to pay back time lost. Dean’s proposal is that time and history are both continuous, but also full of moments that connect through that continuity, and which deserve individual attention. She explores this proposition through her interest in artistic legacies and social histories and her contemplation of time through material and metaphor.
ACCA also exhibited Tacita Dean’s rarely seen full feature length film The Uncles at ACMI.
