The Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA), Carriageworks and Mona (Museum of Old and New Art) are pleased to announce Suspended Moment: The Katthy Cavaliere Fellowship, a major new artist fellowship in the name of Italian born Australian artist Katthy Cavaliere (1972-2012). The fellowship, made possible with funds from Cavaliere’s Estate in partnership with three arts institutions, is valued at $300,000 in total and will be granted to three female-identifying Australian artists working at the nexus of performance and installation.
Suspended Moment: The Katthy Cavaliere Fellowship will provide three grants of $100,000 awarded to three artists or collectives for the purpose of realising an ambitious new work. The three artists will be chosen by a selection panel, comprised of the presenting institutions’ leadership and curatorial teams. In 2020 Suspended Moment will be a cross-institutional presentation with each partnering institution presenting one of the three commissions and accompanied by a publication.
Expressions of interest are now open and close on Monday 17 December 2018, with fellowships awarded in 2019 to be followed by three individual exhibitions in 2020 to be presented at ACCA, Carriageworks and Mona.
Selection criteria for the fellowship are for female-identifying artists working across visual media including performance and installation and an Australian citizen or resident. Any stage of practice is eligible from early career to established.
Applicants who meet the selection criteria are invited to submit a one-page proposal outlining an ambitious project, which includes the form the work is likely to take, an outline of the subject, themes and ideas, as well as details of artistic and technical collaborators.
Carriageworks Director Lisa Havilah said, “This important fellowship illustrates our ongoing commitment to realising ambitious and site responsive installation projects by Australian artists and to supporting those artists’ visions. Carriageworks is excited to be working with our partners ACCA and Mona to deliver this substantial opportunity.”
ACCA Artistic Director/CEO, Max Delany said, “ACCA is delighted to collaborate with Carriageworks and Mona on the development of major new commissions focussing in the intersection of installation and performance art. The Katthy Cavaliere Fellowship is a significant new initiative consolidating our respective organisations’ commitment to supporting artists and ambitious, experimental practice.”
Co-Director of Exhibitions and Collections and Senior Curator Nicole Durling said, “Mona was honoured to exhibit Katthy Cavaliere’s work in 2015-16 with the beautiful and moving exhibition Loved. Katthy’s legacy continues with this significant fellowship. The opportunity to partner with Carriageworks and ACCA is an exciting collaboration of our unified commitment to supporting artists and the creation of innovative new work.”

ABOUT KATTHY CAVALIERE:
Katthy Cavaliere (born 1972, Sarteano, Italy; died 2012 Sydney) migrated from Italy to Australia with her family when she was four years old. She attended University NSW School of Art and Design (then known as College of Fine Arts) in Sydney and was a recipient of the Helen Lempriere Travelling Art Scholarship in 2000, enabling her studies in Italy at the Accademia di Belle Arti, Brera, Milano. During this time in Italy she studied under Marina Abramović. Upon returning to Australia in 2004, Cavaliere staged a survey exhibition called Suspended Moment, which toured to regional galleries in NSW. Created at Artspace in Sydney, her video performance, Loved, was included in The 54th Venice Biennale, 2011.
Following her death in January 2012, Mona presented her retrospective survey Loved in 2015-16. Curated by Daniel Mudie Cunningham, the exhibition toured to Carriageworks in 2016 and was accompanied by an extensive career-spanning monograph.
It was Cavaliere’s desire to bring to light what she did not remember of her early years in Sarteano that motivated her lifelong project of packing, storing and transporting the wreckage of her personal possessions, and transforming it into performance installation works that have been exhibited in solo and group shows internationally. Cavaliere’s work is held in the collections of Mona, Art Gallery of NSW, National Gallery of Victoria, Heide Museum of Modern Art, Artbank, UQ Art Museum, and numerous regional galleries. www.katthycavaliere.com.au
