Brent Harris works in painting and printmaking, exploring the unconscious, gender and sensuality, informed by a deep knowledge and curiosity in histories of art, social science and religious symbolism. In 1981, Harris received a Diploma of Art and Design at Footscray College of TAFE, followed by a Bachelor of Fine Art at the Victorian College of the Art, Melbourne in 1984. An early studio resident of Gertrude Contemporary studios in Melbourne, from 1987 to 1989, Harris’s works were collected early in his career by the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra as a part of the expansive Philip Morris arts grant. Harris has exhibited widely since 1987 with selection for formative early exhibitions including Perspecta 1989 at the Art Gallery of New South Wales and National Gallery of Victoria’s Möet & Chandon Art Foundation touring exhibition in the same year propelling his career into the national spotlight. Harris has also had notable solo and survey exhibitions at the National Gallery of Victoria, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Art Gallery of Western Australia and the Ian Potter Museum of Art, Melbourne.
Justin Clemens is a Melbourne-based writer and academic. He has published extensively on psychoanalysis, contemporary European philosophy, and contemporary Australian art and literature. Clemens gained his PhD from the University of Melbourne. His recent books include Lacan Deleuze Badiou (Edinburgh UP 2014), with A.J. Bartlett and Jon Roffe; Psychoanalysis is an Antiphilosophy (Edinburgh UP 2013); and Minimal Domination (Surpllus 2011). He was founding Secretary of the Lacan Circle of Melbourne (2004-2009), and was the art critic for the Australian magazine The Monthly (2004-2009).
