Komar & Melamid:
When Elephants Paint, The Asian Elephant Art and Conservation Project

In the project, When Elephants Paint by controversial ex-pat Russian artists Komar and Melamid, works by various elephants from around the world and a series of photographs taken by a chimpanzee called Mikki, tackled the question ‘Can animals make art?’ Beyond the immediate ‘gimmickry’ of the project, the exhibition raised awareness of our own responses to artistic expression, beauty, intelligence and value.
