Louise Paramor: Lustgarten

2 Feb–11 Mar 2001

ACCA, Dallas Brooks Drive, The Domain

Lustgarten featured new work by Louise Paramor who had recently returned from a Berlin residency where she produced a series of large-scale, fold-out paper sculptures. These enlarged concertina and collapsible paper ‘decorations’ were placed directly on the floor in the gallery environment. The scale of the works and their particular and close arrangement purported to more formal sculptural concerns of figuration, repetition and positive/negative space, revealing the profound aesthetic potential in the commonplace Christmas decoration. The works were also strongly influenced by Indian ritual decorations and Asian artforms such as the tradition of folding honeycomb paper.
