Van Sowerwine:
Sharper Than A Serpents Tooth

8 Oct–22 Oct 2005

Main Exhibition Gallery

A giant little girl loomed over traffic and passers-by. Behind her was a scene of domestic detritus. What had she done? Sharper than a Serpent’s Tooth, a monumental artwork featured on the Republic Tower billboard at 529-541 Elizabeth Street, Melbourne, continued Van Sowerwine’s examinations of childhood. Sowerwine’s characters with their doll-like appearance and large eyes convey cuteness, passivity and vulnerability. This harmless exterior belies a more sinister truth conveyed by the violence of a situation and stance.
