Announcing ACCA Open

Australian artists are invited to submit proposals for a new series of digital works to be commissioned by ACCA and launched in August 2020. 

Launched today, ACCA Open is an open call for contemporary Australian artists and artistic collaborators to present ideas for new works to be presented in the digital realm.

Assessed by a panel of curators and artists, three artists or collaborations will each be paid an Artist and Production fee of $8,000 total (excl. GST) for their project. Selected works will be produced with the support of the ACCA curatorial team and presented through digital platforms.

“Our doors may be temporarily closed but our commitment to providing opportunities for artists to make new works remains,” said ACCA Artistic Director/CEO Max Delany.  “ACCA Open is a way for us to continue to offer a platform for artists, and to present new work to diverse audiences, albeit in the digital realm.

“We are also committed to the idea of ‘doing art differently’, which is a mission that means more today than ever before. At a time when we are unable to invite audiences into our galleries, we’re excited to see what can be created beyond our gallery walls. We are inviting artists to think about how they might extend their practices and find new ways of creating in these unprecedented times.”

ACCA’s Senior Curator Annika Kristensen said artists of all backgrounds, career levels and practices are welcome and encouraged to apply. “The only expectation is that the artwork can be presented on a digital platform. Given that this period of social distancing is counter to the way a gallery and artists usually work, we are looking to artists to present ideas that reflect these new ways of being, and to approach this brief with creativity and originality.”

Proposals are due by 5pm Friday 1 May, and will be assessed by a selection panel that Max Delany, Annika Kristensen, Miriam Kelly (Curator, ACCA); Bianca Winataputri (Public Programs Coordinator, ACCA); Fayen d’Evie (Artist, academic, publisher and ACCA Board member); and Rowan McNaught (Artist and publisher). Successful applicants will be announced in mid-May.
