Meet your tour guides:
Rob Adams is currently the Director City Design and Projects at the City of Melbourne and a member of the Cities of the Future Council of the World Economic Forum. With over 40 years experience as an Architect and Urban Designer and 33 years at the City of Melbourne, Rob has made a significant contribution to the rejuvenation of central Melbourne. Rob has also been awarded the Prime Minister’s Environmentalist of the Year Award in 2008 and the Order of Australia in 2007 for his contribution to Architecture and Urban Design. His current focus is on how cities could be used to accommodate and mitigate rapid population growth and the onset of climate change. He has published and presented extensively on the subject of ‘Transforming Cities for a Sustainable Future’.
Philip Brophy is an Australian musician, composer, sound designer, filmmaker, writer, graphic designer, curator, artist and academic. In 1977, Brophy formed the experimental group → ↑ →. Brophy has published numerous books and articles on Japanese manga, animation, music and popular culture. He curated a retrospective on Tezuka's manga, commissioned by the National Gallery of Victoria (2006), Art Gallery of New South Wales (2007), Asian Art Museum of San Francisco (2007). Rebecca Coates has recently been appointed Director of Shepparton Art Museum in addition to her role as Lecturer at the University of Melbourne in Art History and Art Curatorship. An established curator, writer and lecturer with over twenty years experience working for art museums and galleries in Australia and overseas, she has previously worked for the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art; the Melbourne International Arts Festival; the Museum of Modern Art, Oxford; and the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne.
Kate Daw is an artist and Head of Painting at the Victorian College of the Arts. Daw has exhibited widely, including at the Biennale of Sydney: You Imagine What You Desire (2014), Melbourne NOW (2013-14), India Art Fair (2013), and ART#2 (2012). Since 2012 she has been involved in several projects involving India, including an Asialink residency and exhibition with Emily Floyd and John Meade (2012). Daw completed her PhD at the University of Melbourne in 2006 and is represented by Sarah Scout Presents, Melbourne.
Annika Kristensen is Curator at ACCA. Previously the Exhibition and Project Coordinator for the 19th Biennale of Sydney (2014) and the inaugural Nick Waterlow OAM Curatorial Fellow for the 18th Biennale of Sydney (2012), Annika has also held positions at Frieze Art Fair, Artangel, Film and Video Umbrella, London; and The West Australian Newspaper, Perth. Annika was a participant in the 2013 Gertrude Contemporary and Art & Australia Emerging Writers Program and the recipient of an Asialink Arts Residency in 2014.
Chris McAuliffe is Professor of Art (Practice-led research) at the School of Art, Australian National University. A one-time resident of New York’s East Village, Chris has explored Manhattan’s alphabet soup of art, music and bohemianism from SoHo to NoLIta, TriBeCa and offshore to Dumbo. From 2000–2013 he was Director of the Ian Potter Museum of Art, the University of Melbourne. He has taught art history at the University of Melbourne (1988-2000) and Harvard University (2011–12) and is the author of Art and Suburbia (1996), Linda Marrinon: let her try (2007) and Jon Cattapan: possible histories (2008).
Ivan Muñiz Reed is a founding member and co-director of The Curators' Department, is currently completing a PhD looking at decolonial aesthetics and perspectives from the global south and was previously Assistant Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia. As an independent curator Ivan has facilitated a series of cross-cultural projects between his native Mexico and adopted Australian home aiming to provide increased visibility to Mexican art and culture in Australia.
Lisa Radford is an artist who writes and teaches; was previously a member of the collective DAMP and artist lead space TCB artinc. and is currently working in the Painting Department at the Victorian College of the Arts. Lisa’s practice explores the shared space between images, place and people through writing, editing, exhibition making and education using conversation and correspondence as a way of enacting politics through friendship and de-centralised collectivity.
Mikala Tai is Director of 4A. Mikala has taught at both RMIT and the University of Melbourne in both undergraduate and graduate programs in Contemporary Art, Modernism and Exhibition Management. Mikala was the founder and director of Supergraph – Australia’s Contemporary Graphic Art Fair, was part of the public programs team for Melbourne Now (2013) at the National Gallery of Victoria, and previously the Cultural Program Manager for the Melbourne Fashion Festival (2009-2013). Mikala currently sits on the board of BUS Projects, Melbourne.
